Children’s Summer Day Camp — three times the fun

The KSV Children’s Day Camp will be held at the Village three times this summer during the weeks of :-

July 13 to 17,

July 27 to 31,

August 10 to 14.

Students who are in Grade 3 can experience life both at home and at school as it was more than 100 years ago. They learn how to make bread, churn butter, make soap and other household items.

They also learn to play games that children enjoyed at that time including skipping, stilts and marbles.

One of the highlights is the day when they learn how to milk a cow and shear a sheep.

The children are encouraged to wear clothes from the era, usually a kerchief made in to a bonnet, a dress and an apron for girls, and suspenders and straw hats for boys.

Youth Drama Programs

Last fall Charles Pitcher owner of Gordon Yacht Harbour, approached the Village about his wish to establish a program in arts and culture for the youth in the community. A committee from Kawartha Settlers’ Village suggested that a drama program would be the best vehicle to expose youth of various ages and interests to arts and culture.

Mr. Pitcher donated $50,000 to finance the program for a year so no youth would be excluded due to lack of finances. A contract to deliver the program was signed with Globus Theatre and Sarah Quick and James Barrett, principles of Globus are producing and directing the program.

Other professionals are also participating. Thirty four area youth ages ten to seventeen are enrolled in the weekly program which is held after school in the Henderson House.

The program will run through 2009. In addition to the regular program, Globus Theatre will manage and direct a ”Living History” presentation by members of the drama program on weekdays this summer. The players will play the roles of pioneers of the community at each building in the Village from 10:00am to 1:00pm each day

Enrichment Classes

In addition to the drama program the resources provided by Mr. Pitcher has allowed the Village to present enrichment classes for students from Bobcaygeon Public School. Professionals have been engaged to expose students to different types of artistic skills using various media. The classes of approx. 30 students are held in the Henderson House and are usually about two hours in length. The students walk to the Village from the school.

What is the Caygeon Carnival?

The Caygeon Carnival was developed to bring families and communities together in the effort to re-create an old-fashioned fair. The Caygeon Carnival highlights the historical atmosphere of Kawartha Settlers' Village while engaging the public in 'old-time' pastimes and activities that paint the days of old with fond memories.

Who can come to Caygeon Carnival?

The Caygeon Carnival is open to the young and young at heart! There will be something for everyone to experience during the day whether it is guessing the weight of the pig, walking down memory lane, learning how to walk on stilts, enjoying the kid's talent show or just chatting with a neighbor over ice cream, everyone will have a fantastic day!

When is Caygeon Carnival?

August 1st is the one and only day of this historic event. Admission is by donation, and gates open at 10:30 and close at 4pm.

TALENT SHOW - if you are under 18 and have a special talent, sign up by July 24 to showcase your talent and have a chance to win some exciting prizes!

COLOURING CONTEST - if you are under 10 years old and enjoy painting the town in colour, we want you to do just that! We are accepting original drawings of Kawartha Settlers' Village until July 24th. The drawings must include one historic building and an activity that you can do at Kawartha Settlers' Village. All drawings will be judged by our esteemed artists on July 27th and winners will be announced at 12pm on August 1st at Henderson House. Driftwood Theatre - 31 July Friday

This is the fifth year of this outdoor theatre presentation at the Village. A troupe of players based in Oshawa tour Ontario each summer presenting plays from Shakespeare's works .

This year they are presenting "The Comedy of Errors."

The Comedy of Errors tells the story of two sets of identical twins that were accidentally separated at birth.

Show time is 7:30pm. Admission is by donation.

So come and bring a lawnchair and enjoy some professional theatre under the stars.

Bobcaygeon Art Festival-10/12 July

The premiere art event of the season in Bobcaygeon will be held July 10, 11, 12 and this year the event will be truly special. It was 10 years ago that the artists of Kawartha Settlers' Village held their first art show in the old Murphy barn. Four years ago they decided to expand and re-name the event...now the Festival makes use of the whole village and three times as many artists are able to participate.

Folks who attend are able to walk from an old pioneer home, then into a drive-shed, to the century old Murphy barn and even into the church to view the paintings. Visitors can enjoy the combination of heritage and of course the Artwork.

All the art is original, prints of any kind whatsoever are not included in this show. This makes the show extra special....as if not special enough with it's unique setting.

This year the CHEST fund has expressed it's backing of the event with a large grant. This enables the organizers to promote the event to better advantage and we are hoping for an exceptional turnout.

The record number of artists and their enthusiastic response shows great promise for good sales and an interesting time for the public that attend. Its always free, there is good food in the food booth and you can be sure the artists are happy to talk about their work and of course sell it.

Only a limited number of spaces are available so we are accepting artists, to be juried, on a first come, first served basis.

Settler's Day - 14 June-Sunday

An action-packed Settlers Day on June 14^th is kicking off the 2009 season at the Kawartha Settler’s Village in Bobcaygeon.

Event organizers have been working hard to ensure there is something for people of all ages and interests. Activities will be held between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., and you’ll have to keep up a fast pace to get around to see everything going on at the village that day.

For antique car enthusiasts there will be an Antique and Classic Car Display, as well as antique tractors and farm equipment display. Everyone will be asked to vote for their favourite vehicle, and the winner will receive the People’s Choice Award. The tractor race will be a little different -- the trophy will go to the slowest tractor!

If you’re interested in antiques or history, the Quinte Timekeepers will be putting antique clocks on view, and the Victoria County Historical Society will have an exhibit.

There will be a dog show and a petting zoo for kids and for those really big kids there will be a Model Railway Display and the Kawartha Marine Modellers will have an exhibit.

If food is your thing, there’s a strawberry social. The Caygeon Carvers will be on hand to demonstrate their talents, as well as a number of artisans who will be displaying their work at a show and sale.

People who enjoy music won’t be left out. A DJ will be providing musical entertainment through the day, the Whystle Dowgs, a singing group will perform, and there will be demonstrations by the Caygeon Country Cloggers.

In addition to all of this, all 18 buildings at the village will be open for visitors to view the artefacts.

Admission to the event is by donation.
