Frequently Asked Questions
Is the staff trained with CPR and First Aid?
Yes. There will always be AT LEAST ONE volunteer or staff member on site trained with First Aid and CPR.
What should children bring for lunch?
Pioneers usually bring a more simplistic lunch in pail to school/work consisting of bread, a preserve and a beverage. Children are not required to follow this. We are peanut/nut-free and we encourage garbage-less lunches.
Do you allow children outside of your age group to participate in the camp?
No. In the past we have made exceptions for children outside of the 7-10 age groups. However with the ever-increasing demand for camp enrollment, and only being able to accommodate 20 children at a time, we will no longer permitting this.
Can a child participate in only one or two days of the camp?
No. We are focusing some of our efforts this year on group participation, team-building skills and participation. Children coming into the camp take part in ‘team’ activities that build in complexity as the week goes on. It makes it difficult to integrate a child mid-week or to omit a team member mid-week.
Is Kawartha Settlers’ Village accommodating to all children’s needs?
Yes. KSV is wheelchair accessible. We also have a peanut/nut-free policy for camp days. Any unique accommodations are available upon request and we are accommodating!
How should children attending the camp dress?
Children are encouraged to wear their most ‘pioneer’ attire. For girls that includes a skirt and hair neatly pulled off their faces. For boys that includes plain shorts/pants and white/plaid shirt. It is also encouraged for children to wear close-toed shoes.
Will children ever be leaving Kawartha Settlers’ Village during the camp week?
No. All activities occur on-site. Part of the experience is learning how each building had a particular trade/purpose associated with it.
Is Kawartha Settlers’ Village a ‘green’ village?
No – not officially. But we highly advocate for garbage-less lunches. Pioneers did not have pre-packaged foods! We compost and recycle daily. We also use very little electricity!
What can I do as a parent/guardian to help my child have a wonderful experience?
We suggest that at home children are encouraged to try the ‘pioneer challenge’ (more information is given on the first day of camp) but support from parents/guardians proves more successful!
What happens if it rains?
Although many of our activities are outside, we have ample building space for the activity to be reproduced indoors.
